The photographer, whose credits include Wonderland and GQ, was recently let loose in London with the new Leica Sofort. Here, he tells us about the results – and about his beginnings, his inspirations and his favourite photo.
I thought it was a great idea. I've always loved the way Leica cameras are made and I love instant cameras, so it's merged the two together.
Yes, absolutely – it's obviously a completely different format to work with. The project itself was also very different to what I normally do in that I was approaching strangers to take their photo. At first, we just went to some touristy places in London to find some cool people, and we did just one shot around the South Bank, of an Irish skater I met. He was super-cool and really up for being involved. Then we headed back to central London to get a few more shots. I think it came out well. The new camera is so nice to work with.
Definitely a younger crowd, which is great. Everyone enjoys taking photos and this camera is so easy to use. I don't think instant photography lends itself to any particular style, it's just spontaneous and fun – people love that kind of stuff these days.
I love how well made they are, the quality and weight of them. It's not only the quality of the pictures, but also the way the cameras are made – they're so beautiful. I really do think they're second to none.
It must have been when I was around 16. I started shooting my friends and realised I really enjoyed it, but I didn't take it up as a job until a couple of years later.
I love Bruce Weber, Bob Gruen, Joseph Szabo, Ryan McGinley, Dan Martensen and Hedi Slimane, to name a few.
I don't think I can say I have an all-time favourite, as I love so many different aspects from different photographers. But if I had to go with one, it would probably be a shot of John Lennon and Paul McCartney in the studio, taken by Ringo Starr in the 1960s and featured in Starr’s book Photograph.
Natural, fun, laughter.
